Frequently Asked Questions
Will there be many others in the session with me? Will they be my age?
Unless you've booked a one-on-one course or experience, you’ll be joined by others in a similar age group. Our youth sessions cater to ages 10–23, while adult sessions are designed for participants aged 18 and above
How long does it take for the tide to go in and out?
The tide recedes (ebbs) for about 7 hours and 15 minutes and rises (floods) for around 5 hours and 15 minutes. A full tidal cycle—from high tide to low tide and back to high tide—takes approximately 12.5 hours. This cycle is driven by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon and can be accurately predicted in advance, although wind and rain may slightly affect the exact timing.
Is there much boat traffic on the Thames?
Yes, the Thames can get quite busy depending on the time of day and the tide. Whether you're kayaking, sailing, or powerboating, a qualified and experienced instructor will be with you, prioritizing your safety at all times.
Will I fall in the river?
Whether you're sailing, kayaking, or powerboating, there’s always a chance you might end up in the water. The likelihood depends on factors like weather conditions, the type of craft, and your own size and build. While you’ll likely get wet from splashes, this is why we insist on bringing a full change of clothes. For sailing and kayaking, basic training includes a supervised capsize drill, where you'll practice recovering after flipping the boat. After all, they’re called watersports for a reason!
Do I have to be able to swim?
No, swimming isn’t essential, and we don’t encourage it during the session! You’ll be provided with a buoyancy aid to keep you afloat if you fall in. However, you should feel comfortable being in and around water.
Will I be swept away by strong currents?
Not under our supervision! While the tide can be strong, all sessions are planned with tidal conditions and the group’s abilities in mind. For added safety and enjoyment, we often use powerboats to assist the group against the tide, allowing you to paddle or sail back with it.
Does the Thames have rip currents that will pull me under?
No. The Thames doesn’t have rip currents. Instead, the tide creates swirls, or “eddys,” on the downstream side of fixed objects like bridge supports. These can actually be fun for kayakers, and with enough experience, you’ll learn how to use them to your advantage.
I’m thinking of buying a boat and launching on the Thames myself…
While it’s legal and doesn’t require licensing if you follow the Port of London byelaws, we don’t recommend it unless you’re an experienced boater. The tidal Thames can be busy and challenging depending on conditions. If you’re interested, we can provide the basic training and knowledge to ensure you and your family can enjoy the river safely.
Do you provide moorings for private boats?
No, we don’t provide moorings.
Will I see wildlife? Are there fish in the water?
Absolutely! Over 100 species of fish live in the tidal Thames. You might also spot seagulls, ducks, cormorants, moorhens, coots, grey seals, porpoises, dolphins, and even the occasional lost whale!
Is the Thames clean?
Yes! It was once declared the cleanest metropolitan river in Europe.
Why is the river water brown?
The brown colour comes from mud on the riverbed being stirred up by the strong tidal flow. If you let a glass of Thames water settle for a few hours, the sediment will sink, leaving the water surprisingly clear.
Will I catch diseases from the water?
It’s unlikely. During your first visit, you’ll receive a safety briefing that includes tips on protecting yourself from infections. However, the water may become polluted after heavy rainfall, and sessions will be canceled if we believe there’s a health risk.
How will I know if sessions are canceled due to poor water quality?
We’ll post updates on our Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus feeds as soon as we know. In such cases, we often provide alternative shore-based activities.
I’m too old…
Not at all! Many of our participants are in their 70s and attend our Upperdecker sessions. Age is no barrier to enjoying the river!
