Free Women-Only Swimming Course to prevent Diabetes
Leyton Leisure Centre has teamed up with Sports4Life to offer a free women-only swimming course at Leyton Leisure Centre. The course is running every Tuesday from 12.15-1pm on and will end on 18 March 2025.
The programme is particularly aimed at African and Asian women who are want to remain fit and free from the threat of type 2 diabetes, which is up to six times more common in people of South Asian descent and three times more common among people of African- Caribbean origin. Swimming is also good for women with aching and ageing joints.
Hillary Rodney said: “It has been a wonderful experience. Michelle, the instructor, makes me feel at ease in the water. We are taught according to our abilities. Michelle is very engaging and professional. She teaches us the confidence that we need to be good swimmers”.
Daniel Bank, Community Sport Manager for Better in Waltham Forest, says: “"We are delighted to be able to support this Sports4Life project. It is great to watch the participants grow in confidence and see the joy on their faces as they complete a 25m swim without any floats for the first time."
Sport4Life was formed in 2018. The organisation aims to provide physical exercises, like swimming, zumba and pilates, as well as seminars to educate the community on how to prevent the disease. The next seminar will be held on 14 March 2025 at Seddon Centre (E10 5AS).
Claudine Booth at Sport4Life says: “The prevalence of diabetes in Waltham Forest has increased over the last nine years, mirroring the rising trend across London and England. Diabetes prevalence is also due to lack of awareness and information, but diabetes can be prevented and reversed – it is our aim to do both.”
