GLL Sports Foundation was launched at a prestigious ‘Reception Evening’ held at the Cornwall Council Offices on 9th January 18. Some of Cornwall’s talented young athletes came to celebrate their success, and had the opportunity to, first hand, see how they can access support to nurture and develop their talents.

A new partnership between GLL, Cornwall Sports Partnership, Cornwall Council, and the Lord Lieutenants Fund, means that athletes from across Cornwall are able to access vital support, and for Cornwall to develop some aspirational ambassadors.

The evening was opened by Chairman of Cornwall Council Mary May, she congratulated our local athletes and their parent / carers for the dedication and commitment they have shown to their sports.

For GLL Peter Bundey, Chair of the GLL Sports Foundation travelled from London to launch the Foundation, which can support top Cornish athletes to gain access to tangible aid that will benefit their sports performance, including training membership access to over 300 venues across the UK, access to physio and injury rehab support and financial awards of up to £1,250.

Peter Bundey commented: "It has been inspiring to see the existing effort given to young athletes at the Cornwall Sports Partnership. We are therefore really excited to be joining forces with the CSP to bring the GLL Sports Foundation to the county. Together we can provide fantastic opportunities for talented athletes in Cornwall that make a real difference to help them achieve their sporting dreams"

Athletes also had the opportunity to hear presentations from Colonel Edward Bolitho, the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall presented on the second programme of the evening, Young and Talented Cornwall which supports particularly talented under 23s in the county to better allow them to reach their full potential, through financial awards.

The Council Chambers became a room of heightened excitement as athletes were inspired by the evenings Special guest, David Wetherill, a Paralympic Table Tennis player performed a demonstration match against Chris Brown from Table Tennis England. David talked through techniques and skills during the match, as well as saying a few inspiring words for the athletes about his journey to success. Wetherill said: "It was an absolute honour to speak about my experiences growing up in Cornwall and to learn more about the fantastic opportunities and possibilities now open to talented athletes here. I am so proud to be from this amazing county and forever grateful for the support everybody has shown me!"

Mike Thomas Cornwall Sports Partnership Director closed the evening, by recognising the enthusiasm and passion of all who had attend the evenings celebrations, and that the evening would cement the ever growing partnerships to support our local talented athletes.
