Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre host Back To Hockey Cup Competition
We were delighted to host our Lee Valley Back to Hockey Cup (BTH) on Saturday 17 August.
The concept, created by England Hockey, is to encourage older players back to the game and also people who’ve never played before but fancy taking up a new sport. It’s proved to be very successful at club level, having swelled club membership numbers, brought parents into the game as well as creating new teams, officials and club officers.
For the Lee Valley Back to Hockey Cup competition, Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre welcomed teams from seven hockey clubs: Bishop’s Stortford, Blackheath, East London, London Wayfarers, Old Loughtonians, Waltham Forest and Wapping. Teams played a short 7 a side version of the game, made up of mixed (men and women).
The competition was a great success, with everyone really enjoying themselves. Richard Temple, coach at Bishop’s Stortford Hockey Club said, “Our players loved it and it was quite emotional for some of the players: going from picking up a stick for the first time in June to playing at an iconic stadium by the end of August”.
The winners on the day were London Wayfarers Hockey Club, beating East London Hockey Club through goal difference.
We’re looking forward to next year's event already! Find out how you can get involved with our partner clubs to compete next year.
