Diabetes Activity Days for Bodmin; Liskeard & St Austell Leisure Centre
Diabetes Activity Days are being introduced in our Liskeard Leisure Centre.
We are excited to be including a monthly session into Liskeard's daytime programme, targeting individuals living with diabetes. With particular interest with those with Type 2 diabetes.
These new days at Liskeard, have been possible, following pilot session held last year 11th July last year at Bodmin Leisure Centre and St Austell Leisure Centre, linked with Diabetes UK and the Diabetic Nurses from the local GP Surgeries.
Below are the dates you will see us at Liskeard Leisure Centre:
Thursday 27th March - 2pm-4pm
Thursday 24th April - 2pm-4pm
Thursday 29th May - 2pm-4pm
Thursday 26th June - 2pm-4pm
We still have a date for Bodmin Leisure Centre:
20th March - 10am - 12.30pm
March date for St Austell Lesiure Centre
21st March - 10am - 12.30pm
We are working with partners, Healthy Cornwall; Arthritis Trust; National Trust; Local Social Prescribers, all having the opportunity at the days to share their services they can provide for people living with diabetes.
People will have the chance to speak with our marketplace providers and see what they also have to offer to encourage patients to increase activity levels, to move more, and be active
All these days have been possible from funding that has been provided by Live Longer Better Cornwall, and Active Cornwall to support the programmes of activities.
This further funding is now enabling us to roll out of monthly activity days in Liskeard.
Days such as those in Liskeard, Bodmin and St Austell Centres have used data for Cornwall from Diabetes UK. Data from 2023, numbers of people living with diabetes were above 35 thousand, this is key information that evidenced the need to include opportunities in our Community Wellbeing programmes. Introducing taster physical activity, demonstrating the benefits to managing diabetes.
Here are some quotes from previous people that have attend the sessions at Bodmin and St Austell centres.
"I came along to my first diabetes day at Bodmin, last November, it introduced me to Walking Football. I now attend weekly and thoroughly enjoy it. I have seen a really benefit to managing my diabetes. It is such a welcoming group."
"I attended the diabetes day last month February at St Austell. During the morning, I was able to swim, and try pickleball, which I had never seen played before. It was such good fun. I am looking forward to March’s Day coming up."
