Meet the Author: Jonathan Croall
The leading theatre historian Jonathan Croall, acclaimed for his memorable biographies of stars John Gielgud and Sybil Thorndike, has now branched out into fiction. In this illustrated talk he outlines the very different challenges of the two genres. A biographer is dependent on facts, written sources, and the often-unreliable memories of witnesses. By contrast, the writer of fiction is free to experiment, and to liberate his or her imagination.
Of Jonathan Croall’s debut fiction collection All is Fortune and Other Theatre Stories, the actor and writer Simon Callow praised ‘this sequence of shard-like vignettes – some ironic, some poetic, some realistic – which reveal the secret life of the theatre in all its aspects. Haunting.’
